Subash Bazar in Agra has been a wholesale textile market for generations. If you are coming to buy sarees or lehengas here - whether for a wedding, for a shop, or just because you want better prices than a mall - here is what to expect.
Where it is
Subash Bazar sits near Agra Fort, in the older part of the city. The market runs through narrow lanes with shops on both sides and on upper floors. Most of the ethnic wear wholesale is concentrated in a few connected buildings.
Come by auto or e-rickshaw. Parking a car is difficult and the lanes are too narrow to drive through comfortably.
When to come
Most shops open around 11 to 11:30 in the morning and close by 8 or 9 in the evening. Many are closed on Mondays.
Avoid the weeks immediately before Diwali and peak wedding season if you want unhurried attention - the market is extremely busy and shopkeepers are handling bulk orders.
Late morning on a weekday is the calmest time to browse.
What wholesale actually means here
This is worth understanding before you arrive. Wholesale pricing usually applies to quantity - a full set of a design in all its colours, or a minimum number of pieces.
Many shops, including ours, will sell single pieces. But a single piece at a wholesale shop is not the same price as ten pieces. If you are told the rate changes with quantity, that is normal, not a trick.
How to buy well
Know what you are looking for
The range is enormous. Walking in and saying show me sarees will take three hours. Walking in and saying I want chiffon sarees with gota patti under Rs 800 in bright colours gets you to the right stack in five minutes.
Check the fabric, not the photograph
This is the advantage of coming in person. Feel the fabric. Look at the reverse side of any embroidery or gota work. Check the blouse piece length.
Ask about the work
Ask directly whether embroidery is hand or machine, whether gota is stitched or printed, whether bandhani is tied or printed. Shopkeepers here answer these questions straight - it is a trade market, and everyone knows the difference.
Bargaining
There is some room on retail quantities and less on wholesale rates, because wholesale margins are already thin. Being unreasonable wastes everyone time. Asking politely whether the rate is fixed is normal and expected.
Carry cash, but ask about UPI
Most shops now accept UPI. Larger wholesale transactions sometimes still prefer cash or bank transfer.
What to be careful about
- Get a bill. Any established shop will give one.
- Check every piece in a set before leaving. Once you carry a set out, checking later is harder to resolve.
- If someone offers to take you to a shop for a commission, understand that the commission goes into your price.
- Confirm whether the price includes GST before agreeing.
If you cannot come in person
Most established shops here will send photographs and video over WhatsApp and ship anywhere in India. That is how a large share of the market now works, particularly for resellers in other cities.
