Chiffon vs Georgette Saree: Which One Should You Buy?

These two fabrics get confused constantly, and shops often use the words interchangeably. They are genuinely different, and the difference decides how a saree hangs, how it photographs and how comfortable you are wearing it.

The short answer

Chiffon is softer and clings. Georgette is slightly heavier, has more texture, and holds its shape.

Both are made from similar yarn. The difference is in the twist - georgette uses more tightly twisted yarn, which is what gives it grain and body.

How they behave differently

Drape

Chiffon falls close to the body and follows your shape. Georgette falls slightly away from the body and creates a fuller silhouette. If you want a saree that skims rather than clings, georgette is the better choice.

Pleats

Georgette holds pleats sharply and they stay put through the evening. Chiffon pleats soften and open up as you move, which some people prefer and some find frustrating.

Transparency

Chiffon is sheerer. Both usually need a petticoat, but chiffon needs more attention to what is underneath.

Weight and comfort

Chiffon is lighter and cooler - the better pick for a long summer function. Georgette is only slightly heavier but the difference is noticeable over several hours.

Creasing

Georgette resists creasing better. Chiffon creases if it sits folded in a bag, which matters if you are travelling to a function.

How work sits on them

Georgette carries heavier embroidery, sequin and stone work without sagging. On chiffon, very heavy work can pull the fabric down at the border. This is why lighter gota patti and sequin work is usually done on chiffon and heavier embroidery on georgette.

Which one for which occasion

Situation Better choice
Summer daytime function Chiffon
Evening party, want defined pleats Georgette
Heavy embroidery or stone work Georgette
Travelling to a wedding Georgette
First saree, want easy draping Chiffon
Want a fuller silhouette Georgette

A note on price

Neither fabric is inherently more expensive. The price of a saree depends far more on the work done on it than on whether it is chiffon or georgette. If one is much cheaper than the other in a shop, look at the work, not the fabric name.

How to check which one you are holding

Hold the fabric up and look at the surface. Georgette has a faint grainy texture, almost like very fine sand. Chiffon looks smooth. Scrunch a corner in your hand and release it - georgette springs back with fewer creases.
